Tanzania announces gas discovery at Mnazi Bay

Tanzanian Energy Minister Juma Homera announced an estimated 223 billion cubic feet natural gas discovery at Mnazi Bay in Mtwara region on 27 October 2026. TPDC and Maurel & Prom are exploring the Kasa-1X ST2 well.

The Citizen and Reuters report that this is the country’s first newly announced gas discovery in more than a decade. Swahili-language outlet Nukta also reports the minister’s announcement.

According to The Citizen, the minister projects output of about 30 million cubic feet a day for at least ten years from the well. That figure is a forecast rather than observed production.

Reuters says Maurel & Prom envisages first gas as early as November. The minister also reports talks with four investors on small liquefied natural gas projects. Announcing resources does not mean all those projects have already been delivered.
