Meta rules out 20 November start for revised business terms

Meta removed its proposed revised business terms on 5 November 2026 and confirmed an indefinite pause. They will not take effect on 20 November; existing terms remain in force.

The pause covers four texts: Commercial Terms, Product Catalog Terms, Self-Serve Ad Terms and Ad Creative Generative AI Terms. Meta says it is continuing consultations with stakeholders.

The disputed provisions concerned automated collection from websites linked to business accounts, prompting concerns about reuse for AI. Nieman Lab obtained direct confirmation from Meta; Reuters also received the company’s position on 6 November. The pause means neither an end to all crawling nor a final ruling on the clauses’ legality.

UK CMA investigates Meta terms on publishers’ website content

Britain’s competition authority opened an investigation into Meta’s commercial terms on 30 October 2026. It will examine whether they impose unfair conditions on publishers and advertisers allowing website content reuse, including for AI features.

The CMA must establish whether Meta holds a dominant position in a relevant market and whether the terms abuse it. Opening the inquiry therefore does not establish an infringement.

Rollout, initially set for 30 October and then delayed to 20 November, was paused on 28 October during consultations. Meta says it has committed to consulting publishers before changes. A separate request for information on Meta One subscriptions is outside this investigation.
