Where things stand

On the evening of 31 October 2026, the interior ministry counts 320,000 protesters nationwide, including 70,000 in Paris; the youth union coalition reports nearly 500,000, including 200,000 in Paris. Clashes are reported as marches end in several cities.

France protests: ministry’s initial count records 15,000 participants at 2 pm

France’s Interior Ministry counted 15,000 participants in 65 actions at 2 pm on 31 October 2026, according to AFP and Anadolu. The partial update comes during a third protest day over living costs and public services.

Anadolu also reports 27 arrests at that time, citing the ministry through BFMTV. These figures do not represent the full day’s turnout and may change as afternoon marches proceed.

In Paris, the march follows a route between Porte de Bagnolet and Porte de Charenton after a Council of State decision. School and university student organisations are calling for renewed blockades from Tuesday. That call does not establish that the announced blockades have already happened.

The ministry’s count is below the 410,000 reported by the authorities for the previous Saturday. This third national protest day brings together students, unions and Yellow Vest protesters over living costs and public services.

Marches were relatively calm during the afternoon, followed by tensions as demonstrations ended in Paris and several other cities. Reuters reports police charges in the capital and tear gas in Lyon and Toulouse. Participation estimates remain attributed to the organisations that supplied them and are not an independent count.
