Those arrested are aged 13 to 29, according to state Interior Minister Roman Poseck, cited by Reuters and ANP/dpa. These figures are the authorities’ reported tally, not judicial convictions.

The incidents followed youth demonstrations over living costs and education. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt pledged that perpetrators would be identified and held accountable. Peaceful gatherings elsewhere remain distinct from the Frankfurt violence.

Germany’s youth rallies followed by violence in several cities

Thousands of young people protested in more than thirty German cities on 31 October 2026 for better education funding and against high living costs. Clashes followed some gatherings, while others ended peacefully.

In Frankfurt, shop windows were smashed and businesses looted during the evening. Police closed access to the Zeil shopping street; an AFP reporter observed the cordon, also described by ZDF.

In Berlin, the peaceful Gen Z regelt gathering at the Brandenburg Gate, attended by about 5,000 people according to police, must be distinguished from a separate Gen Z hat genug march marked by clashes. Some participants in the first joined the second, according to police cited by ZDF. The violence therefore does not describe all the protests.
