ChatGPT and Codex will share a usage allowance from December

OpenAI plans to combine ChatGPT and Codex usage allowances from December 2026 for Plus, Pro and Business subscriptions. Usage will be measured in tokens, while Instant chats will not draw from the shared pool.

The chosen model and task complexity will determine consumption: advanced reasoning or lengthy coding work may use more of the same allowance. OpenAI links the change to bringing Work’s agentic capabilities into ChatGPT.

Remaining usage and reset times will appear in usage settings. After reaching the limit, the announced options are to wait, upgrade or buy credits for eligible features. No exact transition day or numerical pool size has been published, so the announcement does not establish the impact on each subscriber.
