King Philippe begins consultations over Belgium’s budget crisis

King Philippe met Les Engagés leader Yvan Verougstraete and then CD&V leader Sammy Mahdi on 3 November 2026 as part of consultations over Belgium’s budget crisis.

The monarch had deferred a decision on the resignation offered by Bart De Wever the previous day after failed negotiations. The other coalition party leaders are due to meet him on Wednesday and Thursday; the prime minister is expected back on Friday.

Verougstraete said a solution remained possible and called on the partners to make an effort, according to his remarks to the press. The audiences do not constitute a budget deal: no compromise has been announced in the material consulted.

The king is due to receive the leaders of the five coalition parties—N-VA, MR, Les Engagés, Vooruit and CD&V—from Tuesday 3 November. A further audience with De Wever is planned for Friday 6 November.

The intervention extends the search for a budget compromise. It is neither immediate acceptance of the resignation nor an election announcement. No budget agreement has been established at this stage.

Belgium: De Wever heads to king after budget talks fail

Overnight talks on Belgium’s federal budget ended without agreement on 2 November 2026. Bart De Wever went to the palace to offer his government’s resignation, Euronews reported, citing local media; acceptance of that resignation has not been established.

The audience with King Philippe had been announced for 9:30 a.m. Belgian time. The move followed another unsuccessful meeting of the Arizona coalition’s core cabinet.

21 News describes disagreements over the balance between new tax revenue and spending restraint. A prime minister’s approach to the monarch does not alone establish the government’s definitive collapse or new elections. The palace’s response remains the key unresolved point.
