Southern African weather warnings: Bristol highlights barriers to evacuation
In a statement dated 2 November 2026, the University of Bristol highlights that receiving a weather warning does not necessarily enable evacuation. It presents southern African research published online on 28 September in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.
The authors identify lack of trust, communication problems and practical inability to move among the barriers. They propose greater community involvement and coordination between agencies.
The day’s development is this research communication, rather than the paper’s original publication. The recommendations do not yet demonstrate a measured reduction in deaths.
