Where things stand

On 4 November 2026 at around 13:06 GMT, the STOXX 600 was up 1.55% and the CAC 40 gained 1.76% to 8,161.77, according to Reuters. Banks supported the rebound; this is an intraday snapshot before the close.

European shares rebound during trading, supported by banks

Major European stock markets rose on 4 November 2026 after the previous day’s decline. At around 13:06 GMT, the STOXX 600 was up 1.55% and the CAC 40 gained 1.76% to 8,161.77 points, according to Reuters’ intraday report.

The move strengthened during the day: Reuters had already recorded a 0.5% STOXX 600 gain at 08:16 GMT. Banks were among the main supports. In an analysis published at 12:30, XTB reported gains of more than 4% for Société Générale and BNP Paribas.

Market commentary linked the rebound to the US midterm election results and a reassessment of their economic consequences. This is an interpretation of price movements, rather than a measurement isolating their cause.

The quoted levels are observations at different times, not closing prices. European trading was still under way when these snapshots were taken.

Reuters and AFP linked the cautious mood to concerns over AI-related stocks and the wait for US midterm election results. This is a market interpretation, distinct from measured price changes.

The decline was not uniform: Bayer was rising after lifting its annual guidance. These figures describe early trading, not the close, and do not establish the day’s final performance.

Rounded figures reported by dpa put the FTSE 100 down 1.1%, the DAX down 0.5% and the CAC 40 down 0.3%. Markets were already lower at midday as traders awaited US election results, MT Newswires reported.

Reactions to company earnings differed sharply: dpa reported a 26.8% fall in TeamViewer after it cut its growth forecast, but gains of 3.9% for Lufthansa and 3.6% for Bayer. Individual shares therefore diverged substantially from the broader index movements.

The Paris gain amounts to 78.27 points from the previous close. Euronext data and market reports agree that the index returned above 8,000.

The session unfolded alongside falling oil prices and hopes for diplomacy over Iran. Market commentary linked cheaper oil to support for energy-cost-sensitive shares and pressure on oil companies. This is an interpretation of the session, separate from the measured index changes.

Reports from MT Newswires and DPA agree that the Stoxx Europe 600 and the German, French, British and Swiss benchmarks rose.

Investors are awaiting announcements from the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan. Those decisions had not been delivered within the period covered.

The session offers some relief after a difficult week for European equities. Market reports attributed part of the improved mood to lower oil prices easing inflation concerns; this is market interpretation rather than a measured causal relationship.
