Where things stand

As of 2 November 2026, OpenAI has launched Grid Protectors. A Georgia pilot plans up to 1,000 MW of flexible demand; no delivered curtailment is established.

OpenAI announces demand-reduction programme for future campuses when grids are strained

OpenAI launched Grid Protectors on 2 November 2026, a US programme to arrange temporary reductions in future compute-campus electricity demand with utilities and regulators when grids are under strain.

The planned campus in Effingham County, Georgia, is intended as a pilot. The announced agreement provides up to 1,000 megawatts of flexibility. That is available power flexibility, not energy already saved.

Arrangements are to specify each site's reduction capability and activation conditions. OpenAI says it intends to cover infrastructure and electricity-service costs for its Georgia project.

The programme concerns future facilities. The sources therefore establish neither curtailment already delivered under this announcement nor an actual reduction in household bills. Those outcomes depend on commissioning and implementation of the agreements.
