OpenAI announces vehicle design research with Mazda

OpenAI announced a research collaboration with Mazda on 3 November 2026 to explore using its AI models to design and evaluate vehicles. The work involves the Japanese carmaker’s aerodynamics and crash-safety teams.

OpenAI says simulations will compare body shapes and their effects on airflow and structural behaviour, taking styling and cost into account. It promises results in coming months, without a quantified performance gain or production vehicle announcement.

The experiment is part of broader physical engineering research. OpenAI acknowledges that its own electronic device prototype required several rounds of human revision to meet manufacturing tolerances, assembly requirements and production constraints.
