OpenAI launches Images 2.6 and rolls out GIF creation in ChatGPT
OpenAI announced Images 2.6 on 4 November 2026 for ChatGPT, Codex and its API. The update adds animated GIFs and aims to preserve character or product details more consistently through successive edits.
The company says generation is 50% faster than before; this is the developer’s reported measurement. In the API, Flare prioritises speed and Sunburst detail. SVG export also enables vector visuals.
OpenAI announces Images 2.6 across all plans on web, mobile and desktop, but its release notes say GIF creation in ChatGPT is rolling out gradually. Features differ by channel: OpenRouter says SVG and GIF outputs for Sunburst are not yet available on its service.
