Abu Dhabi: Hatton and Rahm join Laporta, McIlroy one shot back

At Yas Links, Hatton shot 65 and Rahm 67, while Laporta, the outright leader after an opening 62, returned a second-round 70. The leaderboard has tightened ahead of the final two days.

McIlroy made eleven birdies and two bogeys to reach 11 under overall. His recovery came a day after a two-stroke penalty changed his opening score to 70. That penalty remains part of his total: Friday’s rise reflects his play rather than a reversal of the ruling.

Abu Dhabi: McIlroy takes two-stroke penalty as Laporta leads

Rory McIlroy received a two-stroke penalty after the opening round of the Abu Dhabi Championship on 5 November 2026. His 70 leaves him eight shots behind Francesco Laporta, who shot 62.

The ruling concerns his actions behind the ball at Yas Links’ 12th hole. Following a video review, his score at the par four changed from six to eight. McIlroy said he accepted the penalty while denying any intention to improve his lie.

Laporta completed a bogey-free round at ten under par. He leads his nearest challengers, including Jon Rahm, by three strokes. These are opening-round standings, rather than the tournament’s final result.
