Guinea: Aliou Bah’s detention and release

Newest to oldest

Guinean opposition leader Aliou Bah is released

Aliou Bah, president of the Liberal Democratic Movement, regained his freedom in Guinea on 6 November 2026. Guinée360 reported his release and his party announced it, while the Justice Ministry described the end of the reintegration programme at Sonfonia.

The opposition leader had been transferred to the Sonfonia gendarmerie camp following a presidential pardon announced in October. His actual release therefore came after that decision and the period spent in the programme.

Guinée360 recalls that he was arrested in December 2024 and sentenced to two years for offending the head of state, a sentence upheld on appeal in May 2025. The pardon and release do not amount to a judicial reversal of that conviction.

The ministry says a memorandum written by Aliou Bah was presented during the closing ceremony. In its statement, MoDeL thanked supporters and reiterated its commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
