Where things stand

On 6 November 2026, Congo launched its mobilisation for the UN Decade 2027–2036 at Impani. Several African leaders attended; restoration outcomes remain to be measured.

Congo launches reforestation mobilisation at Ignie

Denis Sassou N’Guesso launched Congo’s mobilisation for the United Nations Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation at Impani in Ignie district on 6 November 2026. The ceremony marked the country’s 40th National Tree Day.

The presidents of Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic attended, according to Anadolu and Les Dépêches de Brazzaville. Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye handed over a mango sapling, which was then planted.

The international decade covers 2027–2036, so Congo’s launch precedes that period. The Congolese president presents the initiative as a call to reverse forest destruction and expand tree cover.

A ceremonial planting does not establish the programme’s ecological outcomes. The reports used provide no audited tally of areas durably restored or seedling survival; those indicators will help assess implementation.
