Malaysia: attorney-general postpones Najib’s house arrest

Malaysia’s attorney-general’s office called on 6 November 2026 for a temporary suspension of Najib Razak’s transfer to house arrest. It cited questions over the interpretation of his conditional pardon and a court order.

The announcement followed payment of the RM50 million fine in the SRC International case. The attorney-general’s office says it must establish whether payment ends that sentence or merely permits the remaining term to be served at home until 23 August 2028.

That distinction also affects the sequence of the separate 1MDB sentence, the office said. It called for the existing detention arrangements to remain in place during the legal review. Reports about a departure from prison therefore do not establish that a lasting transfer home has taken effect.
