Europe: retail trade trends

Newest to oldest

Euro-area retail sales fall 0.7% in September

Retail trade volume fell 0.7% in the euro area in September compared with August, according to initial estimates released by Eurostat on 6 November 2026. The European Union recorded a 0.6% decline.

The monthly changes are seasonally adjusted. They follow August growth revised to 0.4% in both areas, as noted in Alliance News reporting published by AJ Bell.

The annual trend remains positive: the calendar-adjusted index rose 0.4% in the euro area and 0.9% in the EU compared with September 2025.

These figures measure volumes sold, rather than turnover in current euros. The monthly fall and annual increase describe different comparisons; the initial estimates remain subject to revision.
