Syrian official Mazen Alloush communicated the decision to SANA. The announced reopening covers passengers and commercial transport, following diplomatic exchanges aimed at containing tensions over Jordanian strikes in southern Syria.

The Syrian authority says humanitarian exceptions remained in place during the closure. The announcements provide no independent count of traffic actually restored. The joint security committee announced by the two countries is a separate measure from the border reopening.

Syria and Jordan announce joint security panel after airstrikes

Syria and Jordan have announced a joint security committee to examine recent Jordanian airstrikes and their consequences. The agreement, made public overnight on 27–28 October 2026, follows a call between Foreign Ministers Asaad al-Shaibani and Ayman Safadi.

Official statements from both countries say the committee will establish the facts and improve field and intelligence coordination while safeguarding Syrian sovereignty and protecting civilians.

Safadi expressed regret over civilian victims. He described the strikes as an operation against Islamic State intended to prevent threats to Jordan; that justification remains Amman’s account.

The announcements reviewed name neither the committee’s members nor a date for releasing its conclusions. Announcing the panel does not establish the findings of an investigation.

Amman presents its strikes on 26 October as a response to the church attack in Karak governorate and says it targeted terrorist organisations. Damascus says there was no prior coordination.

Syrian health officials report civilian deaths and injuries, including children. Available casualty figures are changing and do not provide a settled total for this report. The identities of those targeted and their alleged link to the Karak attack have not been independently established in the material consulted.
