OpenAI appoints former Army secretary Dan Driscoll to national-security role

OpenAI announced on 2 November 2026 that former US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll would become senior counselor for national security modernization, a newly created position.

He is to advise leadership and external partners on advanced AI use in national security and cybersecurity, particularly with US allies. The company says he will work with government, industry and academic leaders and help its teams understand the operational needs of relevant institutions.

The appointment clarifies the company's organisation for this work. It does not establish a new contract, a model deployment at an institution or a change in usage rules. The announcement gives neither compensation nor a precise starting date.
