Bournemouth archaeologist argues Iron Age ruler Verica was a woman

Published

Bournemouth University archaeologist Miles Russell presented a reinterpretation of Verica on 5 November 2026, arguing that the ruler of Iron Age Britain was a woman.

He points to the name and coin imagery, interpreting mounted figures as female. His arguments appear in Current Archaeology and a book announced for January.

Der Standard notes that they have not yet appeared in a peer-reviewed research journal. This archaeological interpretation is not an established consensus.
