Seoul: KOSPI closes down 5.28% as chip shares slide

Published

The KOSPI ended the 5 November 2026 session at 5,383.80 points, down 300 points, or 5.28%. The close extends the decline seen during morning trading on South Korea’s stock market.

Samsung Electronics lost 7.57% and SK hynix 9.46%, according to Hankyung market data. The selloff therefore hit two major semiconductor stocks central to investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Aju Press links the selling to investor fears of tighter US rules on AI data centres following the midterm elections. This is an explanation of market sentiment, rather than an announcement of new regulation.

The 5,383.80 figure is the closing level, distinct from intraday quotes and the temporary suspension of programme selling reported earlier in the day.
