Japan marine DNA study detects 126 fish species beyond earlier northern records

An Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology study published in Diversity and Distributions on 26 October 2026 detects DNA from 126 fish species farther north than their previously recorded limits in Japan.

Researchers analysed 2,672 seawater samples collected at 316 sites between 2017 and 2024. The method identifies genetic traces rather than fish caught or directly observed.

The findings may help track changing species distributions. They do not by themselves establish that every species has formed a lasting population in those areas, or that warming explains every detection.
