UAE University announces catalyst for water treatment and hydrogen production

United Arab Emirates University presented a photocatalyst on 26 October 2026 designed to remove antibiotic residues from water and produce hydrogen. The announced performance comes from experiments under LED light, rather than an industrial installation.

According to the university, the process removed more than 98% of ciprofloxacin within 90 minutes. The material combines manganese dioxide and zinc indium sulfide, with a phosphate surface treatment to improve its response to light.

Reported hydrogen production was five times that achieved with either component alone. These remain results communicated by the research team: the consulted sources do not document large-scale deployment or performance under real-world wastewater treatment conditions.
