Sinjar units announce agreement to join Iraqi federal security forces

The Sinjar Resistance Units and associated women’s units announced an agreement with Baghdad on 26 October 2026 to end their independent military status and join Iraq’s federal security system.

Their command puts the number of fighters covered at 4,165 women and men. Iraqi authorities also announce the takeover of military positions and the transfer of security responsibilities to federal institutions.

These Yazidi groups, linked to the PKK, formed in the context of Islamic State’s attacks on Sinjar. The agreement aims to bring their weapons and structures under state authority. Available statements describe a process under way; they do not establish that every member’s administrative integration and the handover of all weapons are complete.
