Spain: authorities report around 64 deaths in Urda train collision

Two high-speed trains collided near Urda in Spain’s Toledo province on 28 October 2026. Castilla-La Mancha’s president, Emiliano García-Page, reported around 64 deaths, a provisional toll that could rise.

The collision involved a Renfe AVE train and an Iryo train. Infrastructure manager Adif announced the suspension of services on the high-speed line connecting Madrid with Andalusia.

AFP reporters at the scene described overturned carriages at the bottom of an embankment and a large emergency response. Regional statements reported by EFE said teams were still searching for bodies in the wreckage. Dozens were injured, but published figures vary by source and the timing of the assessments.

The announced death toll is the authorities’ assessment at this stage, rather than a final count. The sources consulted do not establish the cause of the collision; no technical hypothesis is presented here as an investigative finding.
