Washington sanctions Rwanda's defence ministry and Zigama

The United States imposed sanctions on Rwanda's Ministry of Defence and Zigama Credit and Savings Society on 28 October 2026. Treasury accuses them of supporting M23 in eastern DRC.

Assets under US jurisdiction are blocked and relevant transactions are generally prohibited for US persons, subject to applicable exemptions or authorisations.

The allegations of military and financial support are Washington's. Kigali denies backing the rebellion; Reuters reported no immediate response from the Rwandan or Congolese governments to the sanctions.
