Iraqi and Syrian leaders discuss oil and borders in Damascus

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on 28 October 2026. Official accounts relayed by Al Bawaba and Al-Monitor place energy, trade and border security at the centre of the talks.

Discussions included plans for Iraqi oil exports through the Baniyas route and agricultural cooperation. The delegations also examined ways to bring companies and investors together.

These are discussions of projects and bilateral priorities. The sources consulted establish neither a pipeline restart following the meeting nor an actual increase in export volumes. Implementation arrangements and timing remain to be documented.
