Praying Mantis: US and Iranian naval forces clash

On 18 April 1988, the US Navy attacked Iranian targets in the Gulf in Operation Praying Mantis.

Washington presented the operation as retaliation for the mining of the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts four days earlier. Platforms used by Iran were destroyed and several Iranian vessels were sunk or damaged.

The episode took place during the Iran-Iraq War and the confrontation over protecting merchant shipping. It was a precedent for direct military conflict between the United States and Iran, long before the air operations of 2025 and 2026.
