Mohammad Khatami wins presidency on a reform platform

On 23 May 1997, Mohammad Khatami won Iran’s presidential election, opening a period of expectations for reform.

The cleric campaigned for greater cultural and political freedoms. His victory revealed the importance of a young population’s aspirations without removing the supreme leader’s role or unelected institutions.

The period helps explain alternating openings and crackdowns within the Islamic Republic. A presidential election changed the executive; it did not transfer all state authority to the president.
