Egypt's central bank raises policy rates by 100 basis points

The Central Bank of Egypt announced a one-percentage-point increase in policy rates on 29 October 2026. The overnight deposit rate rises to 20% and the lending rate to 21%.

The main operation rate and the discount rate rise to 20.5%. The Monetary Policy Committee took the decision.

The bank attributes the increase to adverse external conditions and heightened uncertainty. It says it aims to anchor expectations and preserve the decline in inflation. These objectives do not establish that the increase has already delivered its intended effects.
