Belgian king defers decision on De Wever’s resignation offer

King Philippe deferred his decision on Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s resignation offer on 2 November 2026, after negotiations on the 2027 budget failed. The palace announced further consultations.

The king is due to receive the leaders of the five coalition parties—N-VA, MR, Les Engagés, Vooruit and CD&V—from Tuesday 3 November. A further audience with De Wever is planned for Friday 6 November.

The intervention extends the search for a budget compromise. It is neither immediate acceptance of the resignation nor an election announcement. No budget agreement has been established at this stage.
