Dakar Youth Olympics: Matar Diop wins Senegal’s first medal

Matar Diop won bronze in the men’s under-66 kg judo event in Diamniadio on 1 November 2026. It is Senegal’s first medal of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, confirmed by the International Judo Federation and Senegal’s APS news agency.

After losing his quarter-final to Ukraine’s Khazar Heydarov, who went on to win gold, Diop progressed through the repechage. He defeated France’s Nathan Gbingbehi in the bronze-medal contest, RTS reports.

The official standings place Diop and Argentina’s Thiago Carvallo third: the category awards two bronze medals. This first medal marks an early result for the hosts, not the final tally for Senegal’s delegation.
