The institute attributes the acceleration mainly to energy, with prices up 31.4% year on year, against 22.6% the previous month. Core inflation, excluding energy and fresh food, rises from 1.6% to 2%.

For European comparisons, the harmonised IPCA measure reaches 5.6% year on year and 1.2% month on month. These rates do not replace the NIC figures: they use a different measure.

This is a preliminary estimate. Istat schedules its next publication for 17 November; the results may be revised.
