Somalia: UNTMIS ends operations after two-year transition

The United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia ended operations on 31 October 2026 following the handover of its functions agreed with the Somali government.

Responsibilities move to national institutions and UN agencies, funds and programmes. Closure concerns the dedicated political mission and does not mean UN cooperation has ended.

The transition changes how institutional support is organised; it does not itself resolve the country’s political and security challenges.
