The Council formally appointed him on 9 October for five years, renewable once. The European Parliament had endorsed the appointment on 15 September.

At the time of his appointment, Comporti was a commissioner at Italy's securities regulator Consob and a member of ESMA's board of supervisors and management board. The succession concerns the leadership of the EU financial markets regulator.

The start of this term is not in itself a new supervisory measure. The sources consulted document the institutional timetable; they do not describe a handover ceremony on 1 November.
