Somalia: Uganda announces initial troop returns and withdrawal by end-2027

Uganda’s army announced on 2 November 2026 that an initial group of soldiers deployed in Somalia under bilateral arrangements had returned home. Spokesperson Chris Magezi outlined a phased withdrawal of all forces, including those in AUSSOM, by the end of 2027.

Reuters specifies that the initial departures concern the bilateral deployment. They do not mean the entire African mission contingent is leaving immediately.

Kampala presents the move as part of transferring responsibilities to Somali forces. The announced timetable still requires implementation; the sources do not provide a verified size for the first returning group.
