Where things stand

As of 3 November 2026, Guided Learning is arriving in Classroom. Google plans explicit school opt-in for services; a detailed timetable remains to be specified.

Google plans to switch off AI by default for student accounts, including Search

Google announced on 3 November 2026 that Gemini, Gemini Notebook, Gemini in Classroom and Search will be disabled for K–12 student accounts unless schools explicitly enable access.

Schools will be able to choose which services to allow. Keeping Search without its AI features will not be an option, Google's education chief told Chalkbeat. Controls are due to change in the coming months; a detailed rollout timetable is still to be communicated.

Google also announced global availability of Guided Learning in Classroom: activities based on class materials guide students step by step and let teachers follow their difficulties. A Search pilot is planned in selected US schools later in November. Availability alone does not establish improved learning outcomes at scale.
