EU opens safeguard investigation into the PET supply chain

The European Commission opened an investigation on 6 November 2026 into imports of PET-chain chemicals. It will examine whether increased imports justify measures to protect European producers.

The procedure covers virgin or recycled PET and several upstream materials. These products serve packaging, textiles and other industrial uses. The Commission attributes manufacturers’ difficulties to import pressure and global overcapacity.

The WTO confirms receiving the EU notification. Interested parties have, among other deadlines, 21 days from initiation to submit views and completed questionnaires.

Opening an investigation does not impose a restriction. Any eventual measure will depend on evidence of serious injury, the EU’s interest and the required support from member states.
