Where things stand

On 6 November 2026, a Perspective in Nature Machine Intelligence proposed a roadmap for ecological foundation models. It does not present an already validated forecasting tool.

Researchers propose a roadmap for ecosystem AI

An international team involving Queen Mary University of London proposes developing ecological foundation models in Nature Machine Intelligence on 6 November 2026. This is a research programme, not an established performance result.

The authors aim to connect species observations, recordings, genetic data and environmental information within a common framework guided by ecological knowledge. The goal would be to better study relationships between organisms and their environments.

The Perspective highlights missing data and biases towards better-documented species and regions. It calls for testing prediction reliability and quantifying uncertainty.

The university release and the article describe the same work: they are not two independent validations of effectiveness. The proposed benefits remain to be demonstrated.
