Israel recognises Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara

On 17 July 2023, the Royal Cabinet announces Israeli recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara in a letter from Benjamin Netanyahu to Mohammed VI.

The decision extends the diplomatic momentum following resumed relations in 2020. It strengthens Rabat’s position with a security and cooperation partner without constituting a Security Council decision.

This illustrates a recurring distinction: sovereignty recognition is more specific than support for a negotiating initiative. Opening a consulate is also a political gesture, but its meaning must be established from the relevant state’s statement. The dossier provides no unverified global count of recognitions, consulates or autonomy endorsements, which are different categories.
