Commission adopts 2027 programme and plans review of nature rules

Published

The European Commission adopted its 2027 work programme on 4 November 2026, with initiatives on finance and AI and a review of nature protection directives.

Brussels plans a venture capital reform and a banking competitiveness package. An AI blueprint is intended to cover sectors including health, transport and manufacturing.

The programme includes a water initiative and a review of the Birds and Habitats Directives. BirdLife and the HandsOffNature coalition oppose reopening them, warning of risks to existing protections.

The programme sets out future work; it does not enact the contemplated legislative reforms.
