Somalia’s Supreme Court rules extension of federal terms unlawful

Published

Somalia’s Supreme Court ruled on 5 November 2026 that constitutional amendments did not automatically extend the terms of institutions already in office. It called for elections within 90 days, according to Agenzia Nova and Mogadishu Eye.

The court puts the expiry of parliament’s term at 14 April and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s at 15 May. It restricts the government to caretaker administration.

Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi rejected the decision, Mogadishu Eye reports. The ruling marks a further stage in the institutional dispute, without establishing an election timetable accepted by all parties.
