Mozambique: BCSS presents fishing buoys repurposed for ocean observation

Published

The Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies presents an experiment conducted in Mozambique using recovered fishing buoys on 5 November 2026. The corresponding study was published in Scientific Reports on 3 November.

Refurbished and deployed in the Bazaruto Archipelago, the instruments transmit acoustic measurements by satellite for marine observation. The team uses them as a proof of feasibility for repurposing industrial equipment.

The signals describe relative acoustic biomass. They are neither validated fish counts nor species identifications, the researchers explain. The project remains a pilot requiring further calibration and validation of its performance.
