France: ministry counts 575,000 protesters, CGT nearly 1.6 million

Published

The final reports on France’s 5 November 2026 protests put attendance at 575,000 according to the Interior Ministry and nearly 1.6 million according to the CGT union. Both figures remain their authors’ estimates.

The two counts are not an independent measurement of turnout. AFP reports that the ministry lowered its figure from an initial estimate of 600,000. Employees, university students and secondary-school pupils rallied over living costs and public services.

The ministry, quoted by AFP and CNN, said 448 people had been detained by 18:00. Localised incidents were reported although marches were generally peaceful.

Sébastien Lecornu announced social talks with unions and employers at Matignon on 9 November to discuss wages and purchasing power. The planned meeting does not constitute an agreement.
