E5 meeting in Paris backs stronger European defence and continued Ukraine support

Representatives of France, Germany, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom met in Paris on 26 October, reaffirming support for Ukraine and their intention to strengthen European capabilities within NATO.

Participants presented investment in Europe’s military and industrial resources as necessary for collective security. The Atlantic alliance remains their defence framework, while Europe is being asked to take greater responsibility.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said prospects for a rapid peace in Ukraine were limited. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto confirmed that his country would continue supporting Kyiv within its capabilities.

The statements set out political directions and commitments. They do not, on their own, establish that new equipment has been delivered or that the proposed capabilities have been achieved.
