Turkey–Libya maritime deal faces renewed diplomatic opposition at UN

Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and the European Union reaffirmed opposition to the 2019 Turkey–Libya maritime agreement on 26 October in a statement delivered at the UN.

Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis presented their position following the agreement’s recent ratification by Libya’s eastern-based parliament. The signatories argue that it infringes third countries’ maritime rights, including those associated with islands. This is their legal assessment, rather than a new court ruling.

On the same day, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called for respect for the joint Turkish-Libyan position. He said Ankara was protecting its maritime rights and interests.

Athens says it is willing to continue bilateral talks with Libya. The declarations show that the dispute persists; they do not establish a maritime boundary settlement accepted by all parties.
