Urda toll rises to at least 68 as Spain declares three days of mourning

The provisional death toll from Spain’s Urda train collision rose to at least 68 on 28 October 2026, according to the president of Castilla-La Mancha. A decree establishes three days of official mourning from 29 to 31 October.

The new toll replaces the previous estimate of around 64 deaths. It remains provisional. The two trains involved were a Renfe AVE and an Iryo train.

The decree published in the official gazette requires the national flag to fly at half-mast on public buildings and naval vessels during the mourning period. Pedro Sánchez pledged to establish any responsibility. The indications discussed about the causes do not yet constitute final investigation findings.
