Iraq invades Iran, starting an eight-year war

On 22 September 1980, Iraqi forces invaded Iran, opening a war that lasted until the August 1988 ceasefire.

The conflict pitted Saddam Hussein’s Iraq against an Islamic Republic still consolidating its power. Ground fighting continued without a swift settlement; the United Nations attempted mediation from September 1980.

The war would also spread to shipping in the Gulf and involve outside powers’ interests. This interstate war must be distinguished from Iran’s later confrontations with the United States and Israel, although Gulf security connects the different periods.
