Maputo: fire damages oncology service as patients are evacuated

A fire damaged the oncology service at Maputo Central Hospital on the morning of 1 November 2026. Hospital management says patients were evacuated and no deaths were recorded, according to MMO and Diário Económico.

Director-General Farida Urci said 22 patients were hospitalised there the previous evening. Firefighters contained the blaze; the ground floor housing radiotherapy was spared, according to authorities cited by Diário Económico.

The government pledges to maintain care during restoration. The cause, cost of damage and timetable for full recovery remain undetermined pending technical assessment.
