Toyota and Waymo announced a new phase of their collaboration on 30 October 2026: a fleet of Toyota bZ4X vehicles equipped for autonomous driving is scheduled to begin initial operations in Japan in 2027.

The initial operations will include testing and validation ahead of a gradual commercial rollout. The announcement therefore does not mean passengers can already book this new vehicle in Japan.

The project builds on the preliminary agreement announced in April 2025. It combines Toyota's electric vehicle platform with the autonomous driving system of Alphabet subsidiary Waymo.

Woven by Toyota also says it is exploring how insights from Waymo's operations could improve road safety. This remains a development objective; the performance of a future Japanese service has yet to be demonstrated.
